Inspired by the Alexandre Dumas novel The Count Of Monte Cristo, Alonso Menendez began a new cigar brand and named it Montecristo. He purchased a factory owned by the Particulares family and began production of his cigars. But with the growing success of his products, Menendez needed a larger factory for production, so he eventually purchased the H. Upmann factory, which was struggling at the time.

Montecristo became incredibly popular worldwide, but due to the Cuban revolution, the company and all its assets were nationalized under the government of Fidel Castro, and Menendez had to flee to the Canary Islands, where he once again began production.

Despite this, Montecristo is among the most popular brands in the cigar industry. Today they have a large range of superior quality cigars, with their tobacco being sourced in both the Vuelta Abajo region in Cuba and La Romana in the Dominican Republic.

Among their most prized productions is the Montecristo Edmundo. It has bold but smooth flavors, ranging from leather to pepper to dark chocolate with hints of nuts, florals, and cinnamon sprinkled throughout. Unsurprisingly, it’s a go-to cigar for many enthusiasts, with a warm draw and a burn that stays even throughout.
